The RDN Subject Portals Project
2 year project, beginning September 2001 ending August 2003
Funded by the JISC as part of its 5/99 Learning and Teaching call
Started life as “Subject Access to the DNER” – acronym SAD!
Now known as SPP (mercifully).
RDN partners
Two other partners

So, what is a subject portal?
Tailored view of the web within a particular subject area
Ability to personalise screen and choice of resources
Storage of user profiles.

Subject portals continued...
Ability to cross-search specially selected resources
Single authentication/authorisation at log-on
Additional services: newsfeeds; jobs info; conferences info; web resource catalogues etc.
The aim?
A distributed project…
Project management
Cross-searching
Account management
User profiling
Additional services
Testing
Marketing

What problems arise from distributed projects?
Lack of face-to-face communication. Meetings are time consuming and expensive
Partners who do not know each other
Different skills, experience, and software preferences.
Problems cont.
Risk of producing duplicate or incompatible work
Local “distractions”
Differing work priorities between developers, hub managers, and project centre.

Solutions #1: communication
Project websites and mailing lists
MS Project
Internet Relay Chat (IRC) meetings (archived)
And yes, face-to-face meetings.
A typical IRC meeting

    Solutions #2: development processes
Skills audit
Concurrent Versioning System (CVS)
Standardised design process using UML and Rational Rose.
Use of UML

Advantages of UML designs
Standardised and efficient movement from use cases to code
Versatility: can be used to design complex and simple procedures
Easily understood by techies and non-techies alike.
All problems solved?
Still no substitute for face-to-face meetings
Still local “distractions”
Still differing priorities between the hubs and the project centre to some extent…
…But
The future
Movement from project to service, from project centre to hubs
Continuing technical development:
  - exploring the feasibility of embedding portal functions into institutional portals, VLEs etc.
A great team!
